Great celebrations require great shoes. Brian Atwood Claudia Embellished Suede Pumps, via Net-A-Porter.

So, a month from now, I will celebrate a rather landmark birthday. Well, let’s be honest: LAST year was the big landmark birthday – the end of a decade and the entryway into a new decade, one that makes people gasp for air when I tell them how old I am.

One of the greatest things that I have learned in this past year is the ability to look at life very differently, especially when it comes to the company I keep. Your very energy and life is influenced by the people with which you surround yourself, so take a look around and see who’s standing next to you. Your crew is a group of people that help you make decisions and support you on this journey through life, the celebration of who you are.

Are you inviting the right people to help you celebrate your life? Is the guest list everything you want it to be. If not, no worries – reevaluate. Seek out people who have what you want, cherish the ones that give you what you need and add a person or two that constantly challenges you to be better. That, friends, is the right kind of guest list for a great celebration of life.

Basically, my personal mantra is to give as much as I can to the world at large, but when it comes to my personal life and my most intimate connections, I treat it like a VIP celebration. It’s a small-but-great mix of people that – wait for it – bring something to the party. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there’s nothing more soul sucking than people who come to a party, take and take, and then leave without having contributed A DAMN THING.

Make your life the best place in the world to be and keep the standards for the guest list really high. You don’t need a gigantic room filled with tons of people to make yourself happy. A select group of guests, carefully chosen by you, will ensure that your life is THE place to be.
