I figure I should get in on this neon color thing before it’s completely over. And let me be clear about exactly WHY I didn’t go running and screaming into neon colors this time around: I’ve done neon before. As a teenager. Which is why it’s sort of an odd fashion flashback. Fashion deja vu is a complicated thing. You risk either looking like you’re trying too hard or you feel like you should be crimping your hair and singing Debbie Gibson tunes into the back of a hair brush in your bathroom. Hence, I dipped into this trend sparingly.
Today’s look is a trick I like to use when I travel. The “top” is actually a neon T-shirt dress from Gap. You can rock the dress on its own as per usual, OR you can do what I did and throw a maxi skirt over it and suddenly it’s a whole new look.
Here’s a breakdown of what I’m wearing:
- Gap Crewneck Cotton dress (a black version is available here)
- Express jersey maxi skirt (similar style available here)
- Ranjana Khan for The Limited necklace
- Sorel Lake Boot sandals
- Superdry Cateye sunglasses
It was too hot this day to add a jacket, but I have a cute cropped leather biker jacket that I would throw with this look come fall. But if you pack a t-shirt dress and a jersey/cotton maxi skirt in the same family of fabrics, you suddenly have multiple looks with just two items of clothing. Add a sheer blouse like the gorgeous ones from Equipment with the maxi skirt or underneath the t-shirt dress and you suddenly have a wardrobe for days from just three items of clothing!
