I featured a video from Equinox Fitness’ Briohny Smyth a while ago that was positively breathtaking. Check out this other video with Briohny practicing yoga with her husband, Dice Iida-Klein, and then we shall discuss.
While I was watching this video, I realized how much I’ve really missed yoga. I’ve been absent from working out for weeks now and between Fashion Week, then dashing home to family after that, I’ve become a bit disconnected from my body. I really miss the intense connection that yoga brings, along with that incredible sense of peace. What I love the most about yoga is that after years of battling with my body via my body weight, yoga is the oasis in that storm. You simply stretch and breathe and become one with yourself.
Personally, for me yoga is one of the rare times that I can shut down the constant swirling of “good enough” or “thin enough” programming that bombards me on a daily basis. Through yoga, I just “am” for a while, turning my mind to my practice and letting my body just naturally enjoy the movement. I’ll be back on the mat starting Saturday afternoon and I can’t wait.
For those who haven’t tried yoga yet, I really do recommend giving it a try. People have told me that it irritates them, that they don’t feel like they’re getting a workout. I understand that. I also understand that it’s precisely those racing thoughts and concerns that make them a prime candidate to give yoga a go. But you have to be able to sit quietly with yourself for hours.
Because that’s where the real workout comes in: the ability to simply be with yourself, entirely within your body, for as long as it takes to get to savasana at the end. I’m heading back to it. Maybe we could all stand to give it a try.
