On a plane coming back from home this holiday, I was flipping through Allure magazine (a subscription I’ve had since the FIRST issue,) and there was a story about Drew Barrymore and the launch of her new beauty line, Flower Beauty.
And I was thinking to myself amid the incessantly-talking couple in front of me and the odd smells of the coach cabin that, honestly, it would be so cool if I got a chance to meet Drew someday, maybe if they did an official launch for the product line.
Lo and behold, I got the invite and I showed up to meet my lifelong icon last night.
Before we get into the products – AND WE WILL – let me just give you the rundown of what it’s like to meet Drew Barrymore in person.
First of all, she’s crazy tiny, like 5″3. Next, she incredibly personable. She made it a point to meet every single person in the room. She smiles, she makes eye contact, and – I can say this with no hesitation – she is absolutely the sweetest person I have met in this lifetime. No, seriously. In my childhood brain, in my adult experience, she’s everything you want her to be and more.
Which is when she starts talking about the products, you realize how crazy smart she is. Not that you would ever think she WOULDN’T be smart, because anyone who produces films, buys art and essentially is as badass as she is has to be smart. But girlfriend is CRAZY smart, and was talking about the strategy behind building a team, the idea behind the products and the formulations and building a legacy of amazing beauty products that she could leave behind for her daughter, Olive.
In a nutshell, Flower Beauty products are the real deal and a rare feat in the industry, which is that they’re prestige product formulas sold at mass market prices. As in, all 181 items in the line are currently sold at your friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart. The product formulas took 16 months to perfect and each item in the line has rich formulas and incredible staying power. Which, let me just say for the record with mass market brands that promise these formulas, these products are the real deal.
And when I say “mass market prices,” none of the products retails for over $15.
So, whether you dry one of Drew’s favorite products for getting ready to go out (the Sheer Up Lip Tint in Sheer Blossom) or you go with any of my favorites (I love the BB Creams, the Color Play Creme Eyeshadows (love Midnight Garden), the Lip Service Lip Butter and/or the groundbreaking Zoom-In Ultimate Waterproof Mascara with the adjustable wand that swivels – SWIVELS – for volume and/or length control), my advice is to try it.
And just like that, in a flash it was over. I got about three minutes with her with about five other journalists to ask questions about the product line. But right before I left, I got a chance to lean into her ear and tell her something personal, some that I always wanted to tell her and swore I would if I ever got the chance.
I made her smile and tear up a little bit. We hugged.
And then her PR person took my favorite picture of my whole life.
But, you know, all that aside, the products bear her stamp of quality. I’ll personally vouch for them. Give them a shot. RUN, do not walk, to Wal-Mart or click here to go to Wal-Mart’s site to buy them.
As a matter of fact, I love them so much I’ll make you a deal: I’ll wear the line – and only her line – to Fashion Week in three weeks. I love it that much.
