Fashion Week Diaries: Backstage Beauty At Kate Spade New York Fall 2013

I arrived backstage at Kate Spade New York after schlepping through what shall now be known as the Epic Snow Journey Through Fashion Week. I walked over, carrying a huge bag of products (I went to get my packages that arrive each week at my mail delivery service…don’t ask) and was covered in snow. But I was excited to see what Jouer Cosmetics, Garnier Fructis and Deborah Lippmann would cook up.

After getting the brief of how the look was created, I took a ton of shots from backstage that I wanted to share. It was super fun and even though it was hectic (all backstages are,) everyone was in good moods. Which makes for a MUCH better experience for everyone.

Honestly, what wasn’t to love, though? With vibrant clothes inspired by the vibrant, always-exciting atmosphere of New York and pinpointing a time in our city when Andy Warhol’s Factory and Studio 54 were the style du jour, the look was 70′s inspired, fun and ladylike.

Here’s a quick dossier of how the look was achieved:

Makeup Lead: Neil Scibelli for Jouer Cosmetics
Inspiration: classic Hollywood meets modern day.

• Face: Jouer Matte Moisture Tint topped with Jouer Age-Repairing Concealer for a finished matte complexion.Jouer Honeysuckle Tint (new for Spring 2013) was used on the cheeks.
• Eyes: A base of Jouer Powder Eye Shadow in Creme over the entire lid, Jouer Powder Eye Shadow in Amaretto in the crease. Neil used their Jouer Liquid Shimmer Eyeliner in Panther (coming Fall 2013) along the top line of the eye, extending just slightly past the eye. Neil and his team used a strip of fake lashes on top of the winged liner to get the look, but he advises getting the same effect with multiple coats of Jouer Everyday Classic Wear Mascara.
• Lip: Jouer Hydrating Lipstick in Simone topped with Jouer Essential Lip Enhancer for a touch of shine.

Hair: Tommy Buckett for Garnier Fructis

The Look: also inspired by Hollywood glam, the look was either voluminous Brigitte Bardot-inspired hair or sleek low chignons with a center part.

• How to get the Big Hair Look: Tommy prepped the hair, then rolled it into giant curls using a 1″ curling iron and set with pins to cool. Once cooled, the hair was backcombed and then smoothed with a tiny brush and set with hairspray. Products used are seen above, including their newest addition coming soon, Garnier Triple Nutrient Oil. It can be used on hair, face and body and protects hair while adding tons of moisture.

Nails: Deborah Lippmann
The look: Long oval talons in a vibrant pink or inky black with embellishment.

• Pink nail: two coats of the opaque pure white Amazing Grace, followed by a coat of the vivid pink I Kissed A Girl and topped with a single coat of pop of fuchsia that is Between the Sheets .
• Black Nail: two coats of the slick vinyl Fade to Black.
• Finishing touch: a gold pyramid stud, placed 1/8th of an inch above the cuticle in the center.
